Wubbolts, Marcel Gerhardus

Marcel Wubbolts (01/04/1963) is currently Program Director at the DSM Innovation Center in Delft, the Netherlands, running the Industrial (White) Biotechnology programme, which is aimed at developing sustainable production methods for intermediates for pharma, nutritional and materials applications.
Dr Wubbolts was trained as a biochemist and did a PhD at the department of Biochemistry, University of Groningen, the Netherlands, followed by position as a a post-doctoral research associate at the Institute of Biotechnology at the ETH in Zürich, Switzerland. Subsequently, he was appointed as group leader biocatalyst development at the ETH, where he remained until late 1997.
Following his positions in academia, he joined the chemistry and biotechnology company DSM as a senior scientist located in Geleen, the Netherlands. Later, he became manager research and development at DSM Biotech GmbH in Jülich, Germany and managing director of the same institution. Thereafter, he was appointed as competence manager biocatalysis & biotransformations at the center for advanced synthesis, catalysis & development in Geleen, the Netherlands and since May 2006 he is at his current position.
Dr Wubbolts is lecturer at the ETH in Zürich, Switzerland as well as at the University College London, United Kingdom and the University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Society of Chemistry, the Dutch Society for Biotechnology, the Dutch Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Microbiology, the European Federation of Biotechnology and the Society for Biological Engineering (AIChE, USA).
Dr Wubbolts serves on the board of the Working Party Applied Biocatalysis of the Dutch Society for Biotechnology; is a member of the Board of Delegates, representing the Netherlands, of the European Federation of Biotechnology Section on Applied Biocatalysis (ESAB). In addition, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the University College London, Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering, London, UK; was a member of the Core Team of the Technology Roadmap Catalysis (with Pricewaterhouse Coopers) for the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands; is chairman of the Industrial Advisory Board of the Competence Center for Applied Biocatalysis in Graz, Austria; member of the advisory board of the Society for Biological Engineering (AIChE: American Institute for Chemical Engineers) and chairman of the Industrial Advisory Board of Biotechnology in Chemical Engineering (BiCE) program, University College London, UK
Dr Wubbolts is/has been member of the following organizing committees / scientific advisory boards of conferences: Workshop on Biocatalysis in Non-Conventional Media, Manchester, 2005; conference BioCat 2002, BioCat 2004 and BioCat2006, Hamburg; Symposium on White Biotechnology, Ede, 2005; Conference Biotrans 2005, Delft, 2005; Advisory board to the organizing committee for Enzyme Engineering XIX, to be held in the Vancouver in 2007; Co-chair of organizing committee for Enzyme Engineering XX, to be held in the Netherlands in 2009.

Dr Wubbolts has published over 65 publications and patents in the area of biocatalysis and metabolic engineering and serves in the editorial board of of Biocatalysis & Biotransformation. He has provided invited lectures at over 52 international conferences and symposia since 2001 and has presented numerous lectures on DSM’s technological competences at customers of DSM. He is the recipient of the ETH TIT award (Zürich, Switzerland, 1996), the DSM publication award (Heerlen, the Netherlands, 2005) and the Biocat 2006 award (DBU, Hamburg, Germany, 2006).
