Jens Weitkamp, born in 1942, studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe and the University of Berlin. After his graduation in 1971 and his postdoctoral qualification in 1981 he was a professor at the University of Oldenburg from 1986 –1988. In 1988 he became head ot the Institute for Technical Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart. In October 2008 he retired. He received a couple of awards and honours, among others he is honorary professor at Jilin University (PR of China) and he received the Carl-Engler-Medal of DGMK. In 2003 he was appointed corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Science. He holds a lot of honorary appointments; among others he was president of the International Zeolite Association (IZA), member of the board of DGMK and assistant head of the board of DECHEMA e.V. He was member of the board of DECHEMA as well as member of the board of trustees of Fonds der Chemischen Industrie and scientific advisor of Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung/Mülheim. Furthermore he was founding director of the German University of Cairo/Egypt.
