1987 Graduated at Agricultural University Wageningen, the Netherlands.
1993 Defended his PhD thesis at the Agricultural University Wageningen, the Netherlands on the degradation of lignocellulose by white-rot fungi.
1994 Research associate at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada on pulping and (bio)bleaching of softwood species.
1997 Senior scientist and 1999-2007 Head of the Department of Fibre and Paper Technology, A&F, Wageningen University & Research Centre, The Netherlands.
2007 – Director Catalytic Biomass Conversion, Avantium Technologies BV, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
He has been involved in biomass research for the last 15 years, and has authored and co-authored more than 40 papers in international journals and is the inventor of 4 patents relating biomass transformation. He has been awarded the Shell studiereisprijs in 1993 and has been Editor in Chief of the Elsevier Journal Industrial Crops and Products from 2000 till 2007. He is co-leading the joint initiative Bio2Value with the Energy research Centre Netherlands (ECN). His main area’s of expertise are (bio-)chemical treatment of lignocellulose, furan and lignin and application development (paper, fibreboards, lignin based adhesives, colourants, UV-stabilizers, bioethanol, furan resins etc).
