Elisabeth Bouwman received her PhD degree from Leiden University in 1990 with professor Jan Reedijk on the study of model compounds for copper enzymes. She was a postdoctoral researcher at Delft University of Technology with professor Herman van Bekkum, and at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA with professor George Christou, for which she obtained a NATO fellowship. She received a KNAW-fellowship in 1991 to start her own research line at Leiden University. As an assistant professor in Inorganic Chemistry she received an Aspasia grant of NWO, after which she was appointed associate professor at the same University in 2000. In 2010 she was appointed full professor at Leiden University. Her heart has always been close to education, and since 2013 she is Educational Director of the MSc Chemistry programme.
She has been involved in homogeneous catalysis research for the last 20 years, has authored and co-authored more than 170 papers in international journals and is the co-inventor on 9 patents related to applications of homogeneous catalysis. Her main areas of expertise are coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis, with emphasis on applied research (e.g. development of new drying catalysts for alkyd paints, development of new catalytic reactions to epoxy resins, study of alternative catalytic routes to produce bulk chemicals).
